15- Figuring out Buyer Behavior

With any product, customers always prefer alternatives and customization. For this particular product, my carbon footprint app, there isn't many alternatives except for price alteration, style, and overall quality. After interviewing 3 individuals it was apparent that offering different priced membership accounts that provide different quality services would be the best overall approach. Similar to gym memberships or any subscriptions, I would offer a Silver, Gold and Platinum options that give the user different segments to the app. Regarding style, each user will have the opportunity to choose different fonts, colors, and pictures that best fit their style. This ill purely be an online purchase through the app store, there arent any alternatives to this segment. After making their purchase the biggest question is, was it worth the money? The customer may think it was a bad purchase if they believe tracking their carbon footprint isnt fun or important enough. All in all it was clear from the interviews that offering different pricing options and a style customization tool were the most popular alternatives.

  1. I'd be interested to understand more about the interviews of the 3 individuals. It seems almost like you are making general recommendations about your own app and don't have a lot of information related to how they would truly go about evaluating an alternative and their own thoughts on your idea. Most apps in the App Store have either a one time initial fee or a recurring monthly fee, and I don't see a lot with different pricing options. I'm curious how you'd execute on your membership levels and what content would be available one higher levels but not the lower levels.

  2. Hey Alex,
I thought your approach to this assignment was very interesting. I also would have liked to know a little bit more about the individuals you interviewed to get more of an understanding. However, I have used apps that offer different membership types, so I think this is a great idea. I workout at OrangeTheory and there are different tiers of membership which are reflected like that, so I can assume it would be a similar approach. Great assignment!

  3. Hi Alex. An app is super convenient and I feel like that's one of the first things that someone looks for when choosing to buy something. Price is also a main thing that people keep in mind. It's a good idea to have different levels of pricing so people can decide what they want from the app and how much they are willing to pay for it.

  4. Hi Alex,
I think the idea of a segmented-price app is definitely the way to go for this. The pricing levels is always a good idea, because users may have different levels of enthusiasm for the product. The issue that you described of a customer thinking it was a bad purchase is one that I think a lot of businesses must weigh when constructing their plan.
